Cooking + Prep Time: 20 minutes
2 & 1/4 cups of flour, all-purpose
3/4 tsp. of salt, kosher
2 & 1/2 tsp. of baking powder
1 cup of milk, whole
2 tbsp. of butter, unsalted
2 tbsp. of shortening, vegetable
To fry: 1 quart of oil, vegetable + more if needed
For garnishing: sugar, jam or dulce de leche
Mix the flour, baking powder and kosher salt in medium bowl.
Add 2 tbsp. of butter & 2 tbsp. of shortening.
Mix till blended well.
Gradually add milk while stirring and gently kneading, till mixture has formed smooth dough.
Roll the dough out to 1/4” thick. Then, cut out 3 & 1/2” circles with round cutter.
Poke holes in centers of dough circles with a finger.
Add oil to small, non-stick skillet to give you an inch depth of fat.
Heat till it sizzles when you add dough.
Fry the treats in small batches, turning once, till both sides are golden brown.
Drain the tortas on layer of paper towels.
While they are still hot, sprinkle them with granulated sugar.
Serve while warm with jam or dulce de leche.
